Fitchneal This is the ancient Irish variation on a Viking game of the "Tafl" family. The red pieces represent the doomed defenders and the black piece in the center their king. The green pieces are the attackers. The red's goal is to get their king off the board to safety - the green's to prevent that! Each piece moves like a rook - rank and file as far as possible. The trick is in the capturing method, called "flanking." The opponent's piece is captured if your pieces are on either side of it! Moving into this situation is not considered a capture. The king, however, can only be captured if he is surrounded on all four sides, or three sides + his throne. |
