Alquerques

A strategy game that's over 300 years old. Originally developed in France, this is a ancestor of our modern Checkers or Draughts. The 5x5-space Alquerques board can be used to play many games, historic and modern!

To play Alquerques...

Each of two players receives 12 markers of unique color. Place these markers on the
alquerques board at the intersections of the lines as shown in the diagram below,
leaving the center space empty.

Each player then moves his or her pieces in turn one space at a time following the lines on
the board from one point to another. Jumps are made like checkers, and must be made if a jump
is available. The moving player gets to choose if more than one jump is possible, and chain-
jumping is allowed. One major rule that makes this a bit tricky: moves can only be made forward,
forward at a diagonal, or sideways - one can never move back EXCEPT from the opponent's
back row, and then only when jumping! The winner is the last player with a piece on the board.
